INSTRUMENT OF SURRENDER
We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, hereby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the Heads of the Governments of the United States, China, and Great Britain on 26 July 1945, at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers.
We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated.
We hereby command all Japanese forces wherever situated and the Japanese people to cease hostilities forthwith, to preserve and save from damage all ships, aircraft, and military and civil property and to comply with all requirements which may be imposed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by agencies of the Japanese Government at his direction.
We hereby command the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters to issue at once orders to the Commanders of all Japanese forces and all forces under Japanese control wherever situated to surrender unconditionally themselves and all forces under their control.
We hereby command all civil, military and naval officials to obey and enforce all proclamations, orders and directives deemed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be proper to effectuate this surrender and issued by him or under his authority and we direct all such officials to remain at their posts and to continue to perform their non-combatant duties unless specifically relieved by him or under his authority.
We hereby undertake for the Emperor, the Japanese Government and their successors to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration in good faith, and to issue whatever orders and take whatever action may be required by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by any other designated representative of the Allied Powers for the purpose of giving effect to that Declaration.
We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters at once to liberate all allied prisoners of war and civilian internees now under Japanese control and to provide for their protection, care, maintenance and immediate transportation to places as directed.
The authority of the Emperor and the Japanese Government to rule the state shall be subject to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers who will take such steps as he deems proper to effectuate these terms of surrender.

우리는 이로써 현재 어디에 있건 모든 일본군과 일본국민이 적대행위를 즉각 중단하고, 모든 선박항공기군용 및 민간 재산을 보존하고 그 훼손을 방지하며, 연합군 최고사령관이나 그의 지시에 따라 일본 정부의 여러 기관들이 부과할 수 있는 모든 요구에 응할 것을 명한다. 
우리는 이로써 일본대본영이 현재 어디에 있건 전 일본군과 일본 지배하에 있는 모든 군대의 지휘관들에게 무조건 항복을 즉각 명령할 것을 명한다. 
우리는 이로써 모든 관청, 육군 및 해군의 직원들에 대해 연합군 최고사령관이 본 항복을 유효화하기 위해 적당하다고 간주하여 그 자신이나 그의 위임에 따라 발한 모든 포고명령지시를 준수하고 집행할 것을 명하며, 모든 상기 직원들은 연합군 최고사령관이나 그의 위임에 의해 명확하게 해임되지 않는 한 각자의 위치에 남아 각자의 비전투적 임무를 계속 수행할 것을 지시한다. 
우리는 이로써 천황, 일본정부, 그리고 그 계승자들이 연합국최고사령관이나 그 밖의 특정 연합국 대표자가 포츠담 선언의 조항들을 성실히 이행하고 이 선언을 실행하기 위해 요구하는 모든 명령을 발하고 모든 조치를 취할 것을 보장한다.
